Cultural Tips for New Americans

May 24, 2011

Alina and Jeff Bliumis recently participated in The Festival of Ideas for the New City, organized by the New Museum. Their work, Cultural Tips for New Americans, features a series of street level posters placed on telephone kiosks depicting advice for new immigrants. The tips come from a variety of recourses such as published guides, public forums, streets questionnaires, and social websites. Alina and Jeff Bliumis gathered this advice to assist and help people assimilate to their new home, like: “#1. Never refuse gum if an American offers it to use. Offering gum is a polite way to tell someone that they have bad breath. Additionally, during the festival the artists asked participants to share their own personal tips with them; at the end of the day they had collected 104 tips. The posters will be on display from May 1 to May 28 2011 in Chinatown and Soho.
