Michal Chelbin at the Photographic Resource Center

September 11, 2010

Michal Chelbin’s Strangely Familiar, first shown at Andrea Meislin Gallery in September 2008, is currently on view at the Photographic Resource Center at Boston University.  Strangely Familiar will be on view there until October 31st and Michal Chelbin will be traveling to Boston to speak about her work on the evening of October 19th.  Strangely Familiar was published as an Aperture monograph in 2008 and was awarded PDN’s Photo Annual Book Award in 2009.  If you saw the show at Andrea Meislin Gallery, you will certainly remember these striking images of young performers and acrobats across Eastern Europe.

Strangely Familiar was reviewed in today’s The Boston Globe. Mark Feeney writes that “what makes Chelbin’s portraits so arresting, even haunting, is the inherent tension that defines them: between how naturally composed these children seem to be and how unnatural that composure feels.”  Andrea Meislin Gallery will be exhibiting Chelbin’s new body of work The Black Eye beginning September 28th.  Artist Reception will be held on October 14th from 6 to 8 pm.
