Alina and Jeff Bliumis have been living in the United States for 20 years, currently based in New York, and have been working together since 2000. A lot of their work focuses on ideas of “cultural foreignness, social misfits, and national identity”. Throughout the years the Bliumis’s have utilized different medium for their art including video and site-specific installations, sculpture, painting, and photography. Their works have been internationally exhibited and can be found in various collections including the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (Russia), Bat-Yam Museum (Israel), the Victoria and Albert Museum (UK), and the Saatchi Collection (UK), which now includes the featured work, Benjamin.

Benjamin is a multi-part installation of 132 books made of foam, something that is repeatedly seen in the larger body of work titled “Language Barrier”, and a pair of legs. Each book is molded from actual books that are uniquely re-designed by Jeff and Alina and range in subject matter like popular culture, philosophy, global, historical, and personal matters. “Language Barriers” also includes work that was created in Lower Manhattan and upstate New York where the artists chose certain locations to set up physical barriers made of their foam books that are meant to represent the construction of language and culture, as well as the fragility of communication. As immigrants from the former Soviet Union, Jeff and Alina bring their unique experiences into their art.

“Language Barriers” will be included in the the upcoming Photography Gallery display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The show will run from May 2010 – April 2011.

Exhibition featuring “Cultural Tips for New Americans” by Jeff and Alina will be opening at Galerie Stanislas Bourgain May 6th. The show runs through June 30th. For more information please visit their website.
