November 4, 2009

Congratulations to Michal Chelbin, who won third place in the competition for the Taylor Wessing National Portrait Prize, “an international award for emerging talents in contemporary photography.”

Michal was recognized for her portrait of Stas, a Russian teenager jailed and convicted of murder, seen below.

The competition, held at the National Portrait Gallery in London, UK, culminates with a sixty-image group show from November 5, 2009 – February 14, 2010.

Chelbin was one of four finalists eligible for the 12,000 prize, along with Vanessa Winship (UK), Paul Floyd Blake (UK), and Mirjana Vrbaski (Serbia).  Blake took home first place honors for his image of paralympian swimmer Rosie Bancroft.

The four finalists were chosen by a panel from a pool of 6,300 submissions.
